"I know what I have to do, but sometimes I just sit there and can't get anything valuable done"
Ahhhh this happens to so many of us! We have a huge heart, an even bigger dream, but we lose track of it all sometimes.
This article is for you are on a mission to better yourself and make the world a better place, and your daily tasks are often met with resistance and distractions that threaten to derail your progress and create a debilitating procrastination cycle.
How reflecting on the bigger picture actually helps get to work.
One of my valued coaching clients is working with me through her struggles with procrastination and various fears while completing a demanding study program. Her coaching journey revealed a profound truth for her: the art of intention setting.
The Art of Intention Setting
I would like you to benefit from the transformative impact of intention setting, drawing from her experience, and discover how this practice can guide you towards unwavering focus, intensity, and a sense of achievement.
Today's Session
Today’s session with a simple but powerful question: "When did you last experience true productivity; that feeling of being in flow?" As she recalled moments of focused work, a pattern emerged.
With newfound clarity, she began explaining the circumstances that led to those episodes. This realisation gave birth to her personal winning formula: a ritual that she will now test to inject intensity and motivation into her study sessions.
The Ritual
Without going into all the details, her ritual starts with her space and body preparation. Then comes the elimination of distractions (partner, phone, and other possible interruptions). Boundaries were also established with herself. A clear goal is set and a timer set to benefit productive study.
Yet, the pièce de résistance lay in her mindset. She recognised that beyond the paperwork and academic achievements, her intention is grounded in her ability to serve others meaningfully.
Her intention is a commitment that she created in a previous session. It is heartfelt, it is mighty, and powerful. And in this instant, she remembered that this commitment is a strong anchor and a propellor at the same time.
In her journey, we discover a powerful truth: intention is the current that guides us through the stream of distractions and challenges.
Intention is the current that guides us through the stream of distractions and challenges.
Whether we're learning new skills or steering an established business, finding our way back to the bigger picture – your social impact - reignites our passion and perseverance. Embracing a profound commitment to the impact we wish to make empowers us to transcend the mundane to-do lists and regain our momentum.
Every small step, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contributes to the greater purpose.
So ask yourself:
1. What impact are you wanting to make on the world with your skills, knowledge, and presence (your bigger picture)?
2. Who do you want to become through this journey?
3. Beyond the to-do list, what is the deeper commitment that boosts your sense of purpose?
Please let me know if you would like a worksheet to create your intention and ritual so you can be in flow... and stay in flow!
Feel free to share your ritual with me, I would love to hear from you!
